Good Morning, Possums and Happy Wednesday and Happy Hump Day. I’m still coming down from a New York City / Judy Kuhn high. I hope your week is going well.
NYC -Day 2 - On Friday, day 2, we all slept in a bit - 8am. I haven’t slept until 8am in months, possibly years. It was cloudy and misty - perfect sleeping weather - but we got up, got ready and headed to the Carnegie Diner for breakfast. Besides, you don’t go to the city the never sleeps…..and sleep.
After breakfast we toured the Broadway Museum. It really is pretty good - full of the history and costumes of all the great - and some not-so-great shows.
Outside, there was holiday music everywhere. Sadly, it was Mariah Carey, “All I Want For Christmas Is You”. Regardless, we soldiered on and had a martini to get the song out of our heads. The fourth member of our group showed up and joined us for cocktails. About 4pm, I had promised Sophia, the person who coordinated our Thursday night Judy Kuhn experience, I would come by the Vineyard Theatre (an off-broadway house) and say hello and I needed to thank her for a job well done.
Sophia is fantastic and I am so glad I made it by to see / meet her. I gave her an #AndyStrong bracelet too. Turns out, she lives in San Antonio (her husband is in the military) and she works remotely and goes to NYC a few times a month. Her husband comes to Dallas here and there and hopefully she will tag along with him some time. So…new friend!
Our day #2 show was “Kimberly Akimbo” -about a teen whose body ages at an alarming rate with a dysfunctional family in tow, friends in the high school show choir and a boy that likes her who is really into anagrams. As convoluted as that sounds, I was quite entertained and found it to be very funny.
However, how do you come up with a Broadway musical about stuff like this? What kind of mushrooms are you doing? What are you smoking? I can only imagine this idea was all part of an acid flashback - some sort of nightmare with a hair stuck to it. But when the smoke cleared, the writers managed to pull to a story from all that mess and even write some good music.
Brava to the writers, the cast and their leader, Victoria Clark, who deserved the Tony for her portrayal of Kimberly Akimbo. Well done. Not my favorite show, but enjoyable and it made me laugh. Go see it if you get a chance.
After the show we went back to the hotel and crashed.
Day Two gets five out of five stars. Day Three review tomorrow.
This morning, I am headed to UT Southwestern for my Holiday MRI. Two and a half hours of clanking and banging and being shoved into a very tight space. I hate the MRI but my neurologist needs the info to see how much my disease has progressed. Let’s hope/pray my treatment has stalled any further progression.
By the way, December 1 marked ONE YEAR WITHOUT BEING IN THE HOSPITAL. A WHOILE YEAR!!!!!
