Today, four days from Thanksgiving, is National Stuffing Day!
Stuffing versus Dressing - it is a matter of choice - there is no right or wrong dish to serve on Thanksgiving - except for the fact that there really is.
Some cooks choose to stuff the bird with crusts of bread, vegetables, herbs, and spices. This is wrong. Others prefer to prepare a similar dish alongside the turkey using the drippings to moisten the dish. This is right. Either way, each preparation is a personal preference or family tradition. The difference is the first is called a stuffing, but the latter is referred to as a dressing. The key thing to remember is that it is a personal preference there is no right or wrong choice.....except that dressing is right and stuffing is wrong.
The usual turkey stuffing consists of bread cubes or crumbs combined with onions, celery, salt, and pepper. Further spices and herbs such as summer savory, sage, or poultry seasoning add flavor and variety. Other recipes add sausage, hamburger, tofu, oysters, egg, rice, apple, raisins, or other dried fruits. Any variation or combination is wrong.
Dressing is made with cornbread from a cast-iron skillet, turkey broth, a large onion (or two), celery and pieces of white bread torn up and added to the mix with salt and pepper added to taste. It’s all mixed together until it looks like soupy grits. Then it is baked until it is golden brown on the top. This is a thing of beauty. This is delicious. This is right.
But seriously, either way, stuffing or dressing, each preparation is a personal preference or family tradition. Obviously, I prefer dressing over stuffing but there is no right or wrong choice....as long as you choose dressing.
Happy National Stuffing Day! Which do you prefer - stuffing or dressing?
It is going to be a cloudy day in Big Day with a pitiful chance of rain. People are starting to head to out of town to be with their families for Thanksgiving. I solidified my plans - I am going to attend a ‘Friendsgiving’ - just a small group of us - nothing fancy - casual dress with good food and great friends.
I am having plasma exchange the day before Thanksgiving. And starting the following Monday, I will have it every other day before I head home. I will not have it again until December 29 and again December 31 (to kick off the new year - LOL).
No big plans today - just church this morning and thinking about the week ahead. I am not used to being off work the week of Thanksgiving. I keep thinking of work but I need to completely disconnect for a few days.
Come join us for church this morning at 11am at Oak Lawn United Methodist Church (or online on Facebook Live). All are welcome at OLUMC.
Anyhoozle, I hope you all have a wonderful day and whatever you do today and every day, do it with kindness in your heart. The world is full of kind people. If you can’t find one, be one! And as always:
...wear a mask
...be kind and compassionate to one another
...dance/sing/laugh it out. It might not help but it sure as hell couldn't hurt.
Peace, Love and Blessings to you all. -AJ
